Payday Super: What Employers Need to Know
With major projects scaling up across the Territory and a strong pipeline of new work coming online in mining, civil construction, defence, maritime, and energy, employers are building bigger workforces at a faster pace. Larger workforces mean more payroll cycles, more variables, and more opportunities for super timing errors under the new rules taking effect from 1 July 2026.
What’s Changing
From 1 July 2026, the quarterly super model is ending. The new rules apply to every employer with at least one employee:
- Super must be paid at the same time as wages, whether payroll runs weekly, fortnightly, or monthly
- Contributions must reach the employee’s super fund within 7 business days of payday
- SG is calculated on Qualifying Earnings (QE), a new, broader base that combines ordinary time earnings (OTE) and other payments
- The ATO’s Small Business Super Clearing House closes on 1 July 2026
- The ATO will monitor compliance via Single Touch Payroll, and late or incorrect payments will trigger the Superannuation Guarantee Charge
- The Treasury Laws Amendment (Payday Superannuation) Act 2025 and the Superannuation Guarantee Charge Amendment Act 2025 have passed Parliament. The ATO administers the new framework.
Labour Hire: Workforce Growth Without the Compliance Burden
For NT businesses ramping up to meet project demand, labour hire is one of the fastest ways to scale a workforce without taking on the full weight of payroll, super, and compliance risk.
When workers are engaged through ACTIO Recruitment, they sit on our payroll. That means:
PayDay Super is our problem, not yours We carry the calculations, the 7 business day fund timing, the STP reporting, and the SGC exposure
You scale fast. From one role to a full project team, we mobilise quickly without you needing to expand fixed headcount or back office capacity
You stay flexible. Project crews can be brought on and stood down in line with contract milestones, shutdowns, and seasonal demand
You reduce risk. Workers’ compensation, payroll tax under employment agency provisions, medicals, inductions, and clearances all sit with us
You get one invoice. Replacing dozens of payroll and super transactions with a single, predictable line item
For project-based, rotational, and remote workforces common across NT mining, civil, maritime, and defence operations, that combination of speed, flexibility, and risk transfer is hard to match with direct hire alone.
